Like the way we think?

Contrary to the common thoughts, creativity is more than simply ‘creative thinking’.

If we really understand creativity, we’ll start to see that creativity is a combination of:

Creative thinking + Knowledge + Motivation

Creative Thinking

This is often thought of as the way we approach problems and solutions. The degree of creative thinking depends on a number of factors such as personality, the way a person thinkings/ functions as well as how comfortable they are in disagreeing with others or pushing the boundaries.

Knowledge

Knowledge lends itself to creativity as the expertise in which a person may be able to creatively solve a problem.

For example a graphic designer may not be able to solve a web design functional problem, if they have no expertise in user experience. They might have a ‘creative’ solution, however without a ‘why’ behind the creative, the solution may be flawed.

Motivation

Motivation determines what a person will actually do. Without motivation, a solution may either be ‘half-there’ or won’t arrive. People are generally at their pinnacle of creative when they feel motivated out of interest, satisfaction and challenge.

There are two types of motivation: intrinsic (internalised motivation – i.e. enjoyment of work) or extrinsic (motivation from the outside – i.e. financial rewards).
