Some may say that there is no ‘technique’ for creativity; it just happens sporadically. Maybe so, however consider these well thought out techniques the next time you’re feeling that drying up feeling of the creative drought.

Problem reversal

View the problem from the opposite angle. Ask yourself – ‘what if I were to do this the opposite or even what is everyone else not doing?’

Forced relationship

View the problem differently by forcing an association between 2 very different and unlike things. This sometimes helps you obtain new insights on how to achieve a creative solution. For example forcing the relationship between a business card and an office door. One analogy between the two may be: the absence of a business card is like a shut, unmarked & uninviting office door..?

Attribute listing

This is identifying and creating a list of all major characteristics of an idea. Next focus on each of these aspects individually and think about how they may be altered to produce a different and possibly better outcome.

Mind maps

This is a visual method of linking different scraps of information together in order to stimulate the generation and then analysis of the overall idea.
I do this one quite a lot! I actually got a very cool app on my iPad called Mindo which is very helpful.

Brainstorming

This technique requires you to get with a group of trusted creatives, to discuss solutions to a specific problem. The group is open to derive many spontaneous ideas, in the hope that they can be built upon to generate something great.
