SEO [Search Engine Optimization] is quickly becoming more and more relevant to each and every business, as more firms enter the world web marketplace. There are now numerous firms which exclusively offer extensive search engine placement enhancements; with others simply offering SEO as part of a package.
It is common for us at Bara’ Design, when dealing with a web design project, to hear the question from the client – ‘…and when will my website be on Google?’ The stock standard answer we usually give is – ‘Google is a mysterious entity whose rules to getting a great position never seem to be the same for every project.’ Sure we can get you on Google quick enough, but at the top of specific keywords is definitely a challenge.
As SEO is a vital role in projects that we play a part in, I’m often search Google for tips, and this will always lead me to ads for the newest solution to get number one in Google. Some charge $100 for a year, and other charge $700 a month! I don’t have an answer to which one actually works, but I can give some tips on what each one will do to enhance your status in Search Engines.
So here are some fundamentals to SEO:
1. Choose wisely
Choose some keyword which you want to be associated with your website. Some words which when a user types in on Google, you want to appear with your website. Although don’t kid yourself, be realistic with the breadth of your business to the words you use (i.e. if you’re a small country town bakery, don’t expect your website to show number 1 when you type in bread in Google).
2. Place consistently
Place you keywords in:
1. Meta Tags
2. Title tags
3. Urls
4. Headings 1 and 2 elements
5. Paragraph content
6. Image alt tags
What’s more make sure that they are the same, if not very similar to each other! And finally try and have the keyword’s headings as far up the top of the content as possible.
Page rank, not public relations; this is a key factor in Google search page positioning. The higher Google ranks your page, the better chance you have in appearing closer to the top of Google searches.
To get a high page rank there are a few things we must achieve:
Quality inbound links from related sites – try and get as many websites with related content and a high PR (4 and above) to have a link to you. Not only a link, but a piece of information (with keywords) set out similarly to this:
Title: Bara’ Design
Description: Quality graphic and website design/ development services based on the Gold Coast Queensland Australia
URL: http://www.baradesign.com.auOutbound links are also crucial – make sure you’re also sharing the love to other websites so that Google knows you have a quality site
Quality content – copy is a key factor. Don’t skip over your content when putting your site up. Google judges your site on the amount of your content, and so do clients.
Table-less coding is a must – search engines get stuck at tabled designs.
Google Webmaster account – has some awesome features to see how you’re doing.
PRchecker.info – see how you’re going in your page rank
Use the best xhtml/css standards
I’m sure there are many more rules to great SEO, but keep these in mind when you’re coding your site!
